On 20th September, students from 10th and 11th grades of the Emiliyan Stanev School (Bulgaria) participated in the “Bike to School” event by riding their bicycles to school.
Every year from 16th to 22nd September, European Mobility Week is held, an initiative of the European Commission to promote sustainable urban transport and raise awareness of sustainability.
The initiative that the students of the Emiliyan Stanev School implemented is part of the European Values and Migration Project (EUAMI) since, sustainable mobility is a European value that combines technological progress, social inclusion and environmental responsibility, helping to build a healthier and more prosperous future for all citizens of the Union.
Sustainable mobility has become one of the fundamental pillars of European policies, embodying the values of environmental protection, innovation and quality of life. The European Union, committed to the fight against climate change, recognises the need to transform transport systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve citizens’ health.
One of the central goals of the European Green Deal is to reduce emissions from the transport sector by 90 per cent by 2050: thus, the EU is investing in clean technologies, promoting public transport and encouraging the use of alternative means of transport, such as bicycles and electric vehicles.
It is not only an environmental issue, but also a social and economic one. Ensuring equitable access to efficient, low-emission transport systems improves the quality of life in urban and rural areas and reduces inequalities.
